Bootstrapping general empirical measures

چکیده

It is proved that the bootstrapped central limit theorem for empirical processes indexed by a class of functions F and based on a probability measure P holds a.s. if and only if F CLT (P ) and ∫ F dP < ∞, where F = supf F |f | and it holds in probability if and only if F ∈ CLT (P ). Thus, for a large class of statistics, no local uniformity of the CLT (about P ) is needed for the bootstrap to work. Consistency of the bootstrap (the bootstrapped law of large numbers) is also characterized. These results are proved under some mild measurability assumptions of F for P . B. Efron (1979) introduced the “bootstrap”, a resampling method for approximating the distribution functions of statistics Hn(X1, ..., Xn; P ), where the random variables Xi are independent, identically distributed with common law P (i.i.d.(P )). Bootstrap ranking & selection revisited

Many ranking-and-selection (R&S) procedures have been invented for choosing the best simulated system; in this paper we consider indifference-zone procedures that attempt to provide a probability of correct selection (PCS) guarantee. To obtain the PCS guarantee, existing procedures nearly always exploit knowledge about the particular combination of system performance measure (e.g., mean, probab...

Precise Computer Performance Comparisons Via Statistical Resampling Methods

Performance variability, stemming from nondeterministic hardware and software behaviors or deterministic behaviors such as measurement bias, is a well-known phenomenon of computer systems which increases the difficulty of comparing computer performance metrics. Conventional methods use various measures (such as geometric mean) to quantify the performance of different benchmarks to compare compu...

Effects of repeatability measures on results of fMRI sICA: A study on simulated and real resting-state effects

Spatial independent components analysis (sICA) has become a widely applied data-driven method for fMRI data, especially for resting-state studies. These sICA approaches are often based on iterative estimation algorithms and there are concerns about accuracy due to noise. Repeatability measures such as ICASSO, RAICAR and ARABICA have been introduced as remedies but information on their effects o...

Implied Volatility Spreads and Expected Market Returns

To save space, we present some of our …ndings in the Online Appendix. In Section I, we investigate the intertemporal relation between various skewness measures and expected market returns. In Section II, we orthogonalize the implied volatility spread measures with respect to the implied variance, realized variance, physical skewness and risk-neutral skewness measures. In Section III, we orthogo...

Bootstrapping phylogenies: Large deviations and dispersion effects

A large deviation result is established for the bootstrap empirical distribution in a finite sample space, thereby validating both nonparametric and parametric bootstrapping in certain phylogenetic inference problems. The bias previously observed in the bootstrap distribution of the estimated tree topology is shown to stem from dispersion effects in the joint distribution of sample and bootstra...
